Check out the 10 dog breeds for people who live alone, according to the American Kennel Club:
1. French Bulldog
The French Bulldog is the perfect breed for city dwellers living alone. They have big personalities, are very content playing by themselves for a few hours, and are perfectly happy living in an apartment.
2. Bulldog
The Bulldog has all the same positive attributes as its French cousin but requires even less exercise, making it a great dog for those who need to go out for work.
3. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are a breed that becomes very attached to one person, so they are loyal and supportive pets. They also require little space and are easy to take wherever you go.
4. Greyhound
Greyhounds are lazier than they seem and love to snuggle with their owner on the couch after joining them for a run. They can be left alone for a few hours, and if you bring one of the many greyhounds looking for a home, you’ll have a loyal friend for life.
5. Basset Hound
Perhaps the sleepiest of all dog breeds, the Basset Hound is also one of the most loyal. They won’t mind much if you’re out all day but will still be happy to see you come home.
6. Whippet
Like the Greyhound, the Whippet is a loyal and friendly companion. They need regular exercise (preferably in a large enclosed area) but are happy to entertain themselves for a few hours and then enjoy a restful evening with their owners.
7. Shar-pei
Originally from China, where they were used as hunting dogs, the Shar-pei has relatively low energy, happy to be left on the couch for a while. They tend to be very loyal to one person, to the point of being aggressive towards strangers, making them good guard dogs.
8. Shiba Inu
Another traditional hunting dog, this time from Japan, the Shiba Inu doesn’t suffer from separation anxiety, so they don’t mind being left alone for a few hours and living in apartments. They can be hard to train and need a good daily workout, but once they establish a relationship with their owner, it becomes an unbreakable bond.
9. Bernese
If you’re fortunate to have some space at home, a Bernese might be a perfect companion. Large dogs with low energy levels, they need little more than 30 minutes of walking a day and are naturally devoted to their owners.
10. Pug
While they shouldn’t be left alone for more than four or five hours, the Pug is a great dog for a city dweller. They are happy living in an apartment, are very loving and adaptable, and are the perfect pet for a first-time owner.
